Groovy, Baby

Marc Jacobs had been hinting at it with his subtle references to Edie Sedgwick, but not until Milan was the message so clear: Spring is all about the Mod Movement.

That means plenty of metallic discs, pop-art flowers, and ultramini mini dresses.

fancy footwear

Minimalism has come and gone (thank goodness) so that extravagant fashions can once again reign supreme. Fall has given us plenty of baroque-inspired glitz and glamour, and even accessories are wildly whimsical. For the woman who likes a statement piece to be on her feet, here are some insanely elaborate shoes seen this fall.

Meadham Kirchhoff might have succeeded in creating the frilliest, most glittery flatforms in the history of the universe. Blush pink ruffles, rainbow glitter, and a furry pink pompom give this shoe its decadent look.

Tennis shoe heels are popping up on every street style sight, but these Giuseppe Zanotti sneaks may be the brightest of the set. For the spotlight lover who wants to add a little athleticism to her wardrobe- just don't try running in these babies.

Looking for a literal translation of the Greek flat sandal? Try these winged flats by aptly-named Ancient Greek Sandals if you are looking to impress Hermes (the messenger of the Gods, not the luxury French brand, though I'm sure they would get a kick out of these shoes as well!).

Prada is no stranger to the fabulous shoe, and fall's statement piece is no exception. This season's heel comes with a signature curvy heel and plenty of mix-and-match embellishments that will have any foot feeling extremely fancy.

More Marie Antoinette chandelier or Laduree cake than shoe, this Dolce & Gabbana masterpiece is perhaps my favorite shoe of the season. Truly a work of art, this high, high heel comes in both blue and white, both versions lined in gold paint and adorned with tiny pink glass flowers. Sweet and fabulous all at once, this is a truly Great Shoe.

FW2012 Round Up

Sorry I've been MIA lately. It's just one of those stressful times again. Did you know that once you finish your college applications you aren't actually done with tireless applications? Because you have to fill out scholarship forms so you can actually pay for higher education...sorry for ranting. I'm done now.

Of course, if there's anything that can brighten my day, it's the beautiful shows of fall fashion week! I was delighted to see designers are back to having fun. Fall doesn't just mean black anymore. Colors are abundant, just in rich autumnal hues. Geometric prints will dominate stores come fall, as seen at Prada and Rochas. With the stunning success of The Artist and the upcoming The Great Gatsby redux, the twenties will once again be the golden era.

There were tears at Jil Sander when Raf Simons announced his departure, and applause at both Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs shows for the absolutely stunning sets. And, for the first time in maybe all of history, Karl Lagerfeld added some color to his usual black and white ensemble.

Here they are, my personal favorite moments of all the fashion weeks.

Carven, the clothes of our dreams

Carven is one of those brands that always woos the twenty-something girl desperate for a dose of French chic because they make clothes that celebrate the fun of fashion. Once a girl passes the middle school threshold, it is officially acceptable to dress like a four-year-old again, and Carven totally gets this cutesy little girl style without losing any cool. The high collars and stiff cuffs are innocent enough, but the plunging necklines and cut-out shirts are anything but. Every girl's dream.

Let's Put on a Show
From Top: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Marc Jacobs

Fashion shows have evolved in the past few years. The internet has given them an unprecedented instantaneous, and now you don't even have to be part of the sartorial aristocracy to enjoy shows as they happen. Due to the widespread publicity of fashion shows these days, designers have revolutionized shows so that they are not just boring catwalks but full-on Broadway-worthy productions. The more elaborate the stage, the better. Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld have managed to master this art of stage decoration, but many other designers are hopping on the stage production (no pun intended, Marc Jacobs) train. While some argue that the costs of these shows is highly excessive, the artistic side of me feels that these sets add a whole new level to the ideas of a collection.

New City, New Energy

Moschino Cheap & Chic has been one of my favorite diffusion brands for a while, because the brand captures all the energy of it's parent, but with the youthfulness that attracts a younger, more colorful crowd. So it seemed perfectly natural for Cheap & Chic to move to London Fashion Week, where neon and cheeky prints are everyday fare. The brand succeeded in capturing the heart of its new city, as the collection got stellar reviews. Katy Perry has already been seen sporting a look from the collection only days after it showed, if that is any indication of the line's success.

The King of Kolor

That's right, I just Kardashian-ized the word color, or should I say, Karl-ized? But seriously, was anyone else as shocked as I was to see Uncle K don blue and purple, two colors that are not black nor white!?

Second Time's the Charm

The problem with Chloe and I, I've recently figured out, is that the first collection I really ever noticed of Chloe's was the Spring 2007 show, which was decidedly ornate for Chloe, and because I've only recently really understood the more minimalist side of fashion, Chloe has long since been a favorite of mine. When I scanned through the Fall 2012 show, however, I was instantly delighted to see that I truly enjoyed what Clair Waight Keller put out for her second collection for the brand. The soft colors and mixed proportions were absolutely lovely. Of course, it was the twisted one-shoulder gown at the end that really did me in.

The Tearful Goodbye

The Jil Sander show was, as it has been for several years now, one of the strongest of the season, and I personally was so delighted with the pale pinks and fifties silhouettes that I was promptly devastated when I heard the news that Raf Simons, the man behind Jil Sander for the past seven years, was leaving the brand. The plot thickens: Raf is now fending off rumors left and right that he will be the new creative director at Dior, and many insiders are speculating that Jil herself may be returning to her namesake brand. Raf will be missed, but we know he's going to do tremendously well wherever he goes.

So you may be asking 'Lindsey, what was your favorite show of the season?' Well, wonderful blog reader, I cannot say quite yet. These things take time. I've certainly fallen in love with many new dresses, but collections as a whole? Usually I hate Miu Miu now and then by the time Fall comes around I'm worshiping at Miuccia's feet, so we'll have to wait and see as we draw closer and closer to fall. Oh, how strange the fashion world is, that spring has not even officially started yet and still I'm yearning for one of Cheap & Chic's technicolor furs?

The 'New Look' at Dior

RAF SIMONS, the new designer at CHRISTIAN DIOR; Alexander Klein/Agence France-Presse -Getty Images

As you probably already know from various sources, the New York Times has announced that Raf Simons (the until-recently head designer at Jil Sander) will take the reigns at Dior. The fashion world has been holding its breath as Bernard Arnault, chairman of LVMH, the luxury fashion conglomerate that owns Christian Dior, has struggled to find a successor after former head designer John Galliano's much-publicized anti-Semitic remarks led to Galliano's termination last Spring.
Jil Sander Spring 2011 -style.com

Marc Jacobs was for a long time the obvious first choice, but he fell out of the running, along with several others, due to arguments over compensation. A few other names that have been named as possible successors: Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Christian Lacroix, Haider Ackermann, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, and those are only a handful of the speculated choices.

Simons was among the speculated group as well, though many considered his minimalist streak at Jil Sander to be conflicting with the opulence and extravagance of Dior and thus disregarded him as just another name thrown into the ring. I myself was rooting for Christian Lacroix, who seemed most fit to handle the couture aspect of Dior, and whose creations I have always found absolutely tantalizing, but it seems I have been mistaken.

While the fashion world eagerly waited, we entered into Fall 2012 Fashion Week, and the rumors began swirling once again. With Marc Jacobs out of the running by this point, Dior's mystery designer was anyone's guess. The recent shuffling around of designers from house to house added new names to the already long list of possibilities, and while Raf Simons was still one of the top contenders, he was only one in many names to be considered.

Then the news hit: three days before the Jil Sander Show, it was announced that Raf Simons had been fired and replaced by the brand's founder, who was staging a comeback. The Fall 2012 show, therefore, was bittersweet, as it was possibly Simon's best collection to date. At Jil Sander, Simons has become one of the leaders in minimalist fashions, and so it was somewhat shocking to see blush pinks, feminine cuts, and modest hemlines grace the catwalk. It was decidedly vintage and, looking back on it now, reminiscent of the "New Look" that Christian Dior himself made famous in 1947. Was Simons perhaps giving us a hint of what was yet to come?

Jil Sander Fall 2012 -style.com
With Simons out of a job and the Dior position still wide open, his name of course soared to the top of the list, and his latest collection sollidified the belief for many hopefuls that Raf Simons would be finally named the new head designer of Dior. Now, finally, we can rest peacefully knowing that Bill Gayten will not have to create another awful couture collection for the celebrated French couture house.

It will be quite interesting to see how Raf Simons manages to do couture, as the Fall 2012 Couture show will most likely be his first for Dior. Here's hoping for the best!

What are your thoughts on Raf for Dior?

One of my favorite holidays, the 4th of July, is just around the corner. I love finding the perfect red white and blue ensemble to rock while biking to the parade, hopping from barbeque to barbeque, and watching fireworks. Here are some fabulous patriotic picks for those of you still looking for perfect Americana pieces.

Outfit of the (Yester)Day: Sea Foam Tides

Left: my tanning + reading accessories Right: inspired by my outfit

Just last week it was 80 degrees and sunny. I was wearing mini skirts and reading for classes under the Southern California sun. Now I am in an oversized knit sweater (with elbow patches, no less), leggings, and boots. Sure, I'm comfy and cozy, but watching movies in oversized sweaters while the rain pours down outside just doesn't compare to soaking up sun rays while reading about the American television industry in to-die-for neon sea foam J. Crew ballet flats.

Oh well. Rain this weekend, but I'm hopeful for the week to come. And can I really complain too much about California weather?

Land of the Golden Sun

This weekend was my brother's college graduation and it was absolutely beautiful in Santa Monica and Malibu. I finally got to see the Santa Monica Pier and bought an awesome Marc by Marc Jacobs dress for prom! But seriously, major beach traffic aside, I would love to live in Santa Monica one day. Everything there is so lovely.

cool as mint

from style.com
Chanel; Diane von Furstenberg; Matthew Williamson; Valentino; Oscar de la Renta

It looks like the deep emeralds of fall are going to transition into soft pastel mints come resort season. Every designer from Matthew Williamson to Oscar de la Renta is showcasing this cool color in their Resort 2013 presentations.

I personally enjoy how DVF did it best. To avoid looking like a prissy mother of the bride, go for baggy sweaters, tailored shorts, or sleek sandals when picking out minty-fresh items.

Will you be sporting mint this winter?

Lindsey Loves: Glitter Nail Polish

Urban Outfitters nail polish

After finally teaching myself patience and the art of painting my own nails, I have had a recent obsession with finding new, fun colors to practice with. And by far my favorite so far have been the glittery shades at Urban Outfitters.

The polish comes in a variety of fun shades from turquoise to midnight blues to multicolor sparkles and is perfect for making a cool statement or for a night out. And the best part is, the glitter makes it easy for your manicure to look perfect, because any streaks or inconsistencies in the paint job are hidden behind the iridescent polish.

I just bought two more shades yesterday (the turquoise pictured above and an indigo midnight blue shade) and can't wait to try them out!

Even if you don't have a ticket...

...you can still enjoy the idea of Coachella. I myself have never actually been (though I came extremely close to going this year) but I almost like it that way, like I have this idea of what a three-day music festival in Indio should be like and that's kind of enough to satisfy my eagerness to actually go. A lot of people have told me that while the music is great and the festival is so much fun there are a lot of things that detract, like running out of water and finding parking and turning into a puddle of sweat in the heat- you know, real things. So for now I have this perfect image in my head of all the wonderful things and I can ignore everything else.

It doesn't matter if you are making the pilgrimage out to the desert this year, because there's one thing we can all learn from the festivities in the valley: how to dress for the summer. Seriously, dudes, the girls at Coachella always impress me. Maybe they are fairies that don't sweat and can therefore manage to look adorable in 100-degree weather, but somehow these chicks always rock the festival like they are on the main stage.

Everything is very eclectic and yet you secretly know those girls spent hours curating the contents of their hemp suitcases before making their way to the desert. The Coachella goer almost always packs the following:

  1. Denim Cutoffs- shorts are necessary to stay cool in desert heat, preferably if they are unraveling at the hems, full of rips, and stone-washed to a pulp
  2. Cross-body Bag- you want a bag that can function when you are moving around, something small enough that it won't weigh you down, but also something that can hold all your necessities
  3. Maxi Dress- embrace the "New Age Woodstock" vibes and make like a hippie in a light, flowy dress
  4. Sweet Shades-When you are out all day in the bright sun, your eyes need some stylin' sunglasses to keep your eyes protected. Ray-Bans are always a hit
  5. Gladiator Sandals- You want sandals that will stay on your feet even when you are rocking out to the Black Keys, so straps and buckles are your new best friends
And some more of the essentials:

    Ugly is the new Festive

When browsing the Urban Outfitters in Pasadena last weekend (after a devastating football loss to those silly UCLA bruins, but that's another story...) I found a most humorous site: the store, under its Urban Renewal vintage restoration line, was selling legitimately Ugly Christmas Sweaters. They were worn over sequin skull T-shirts, of course.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters seem to be the preferred holiday garb of the ironic young hipster set. The more bells and glued-on ornaments, the better! But for those of you who cannot quite pull off ironically wearing your grandmother's knitted holiday sweaters, designers have come up with the perfect solution: the Ugly (but Stylish) Christmas Sweater!!!

    Money, notoriety and rivieras

Of all the film festivals, Cannes is considered the creme de la creme. Black tie on the French Mediterranean- there cannot be anything quite like it. Only serious stars are welcome at the festival, and they dress in serious gowns.

    FREIDA PINTO in Versace
Love that Freida Pinto is never afraid to take a risk. She's got the slit without overdoing it (See Natasha Poly and Anja Rubik channeling Angelina), the yellow is stunning against her skin tone, and the bead work makes it a must-have Cannes gown. Parfait!

    BELLA HEATHCOTE in Gucci
I think Bella Heathcote is absolutely adorable so she can almost wear anything and get away with it, but I have to agree with other critics who claim that this dress is just too dark. Also, I know that there's the prestigious Palm D'Or Award, but that is not an invitation to actually wear palm print on your dress.

    KARA HAYWARD in Louis Vuitton
The young star of the movie I'm most looking forward to, Moonrise Kingdom, wore a butter yellow Louis Vuitton dress with ultra-cool ruffles and a hairdo straight of of the runway show. I think she looks fresh and fun for a young star, and this dress gets me excited to see what else Kara will be wearing when promoting her new movie.

    FAN BINGBING in Christopher Bu
Fan Bingbing is without a doubt this year's best dressed at Cannes. Everything she wears is stunning. I adored this dress in all its whimsicality, but what I didn't dig was the hair. She should have either pulled it all back or worn it all down.

    DIANE KRUGER in Giambattista Vallli
Stunning. But of course, it's Diane Kruger, so were we really expecting anything less? The color, the cut, the gauziness. And when she turns she get get all Dracula-dramatic on us. I love it.

LANA DEL REY in Alberta Ferretti
I'm a huge Lana fan, so I was absolutely ecstatic to see her in a flawless dress that so perfectly accentuates why I love her. The vampy neckline and simple side-swept 'do left me in awe. Lana's been very trendy lately so I've been worrying that she would get caught up in the "Let's Try to Out-Weird One Another" competition of Gaga, Nicki, and Katy. Also, weird observation: I find it funny that she was invited to the Moonrise Kingdom premier because Lana totally reminds me of a grown-up Kara Hayward.

    FREIDA PINTO in Salvatore Ferragamo
Because Cannes is as much about the yacht parties as it is couture ballgowns, Freida picked the best Ferragamo ensemble she could. Blue and white nautical stripes and a halter top. Also, she managed to make the summer trend of belly-bearing look classy by keeping her skirt hem longer.

    DIANE KRUGER in Versus
Only Diane Kruger could wear such a risky dress with such ease. The dress is gorgeous, the shoes go well, her hair and makeup is simple, and she looks about ten feet tall. I'd say it's a winning look!

    MIA WASIKOWSKA in J. Mendel
Another beauty in burgundy. Mia Wasikouwska is another favorite of mine for her unabashed whimsicality when it comes to fashion. But she also knows how to look completely elegant, which is why I love this dress. The drapery is to die for and the color- nothing beats it.

    FAN BINGBING in Elie Saab
There were plenty of dramatic trains at Cannes -see Naomi Watts and Eva Longoria- but they seemed to be excessive additions to dresses only for the effect. Fan, the Queen of Cannes Style, donned an Elie Saab dress that would not have been the same without the gauzy train. Completely elegant and, even with the train, it appears to not be all that over-the-top.

What was your favorite Cannes red carpet look?
