Bags seem to be going in two directions these days, depending on the user. For the practical woman, there seems to be no end of hyper-functional totes, complete with phone compartments, fabulous hardware, and perfect extras like compact mirrors and key chains. These bags are perfect for airplane rides and lugging work materials. But as you all have probably experienced, a full tote is a bit of a burden on the shoulders and arms, and while they are practical in many occasions, schlepping your massive tote around town all day and night isn't the best solution. And so, in order to solve our problem, designers have hatched up the mini shoulder bag.

The mini shoulder bag: what happens when a cross-body satchel takes the shrinking potion Alice drinks in Alice in Wonderland. Unlike the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-carrying tote bags, use of the mini shoulder bag requires extreme editing expertise. Only the essentials are allowed. At best, you can squeeze in an iPhone, a few credit cards, and a vile of lip gloss. Maybe you can get some keys in there. But not a whole lot. 

While the mini shoulder bag doesn't leave a lot of room for extras, the concept is brilliant. When you hit the town or even just walk around a bit, you don't want to be burdened by a whole bunch of crap jammed into your big bag. While walking my dog this week up to a coffee cart for a tasty drink, I found myself realizing the beauty of the mini shoulder bag, which I have begun using whenever I walk my dog, go on a hike, see a concert, etc. In these situations, you really just need your phone, some money, an ID, etc. The mini shoulder bag makes it so convenient because it is so light on your shoulders -trust me, you will never want to go back to a normal purse- and you don't have to do the painstaking digging around a cluttered bag to find car keys, phone, whatever. 


I wouldn't toss out the old Celine Shopper just yet, because in many cases the mini shoulder bag just isn't big enough. But when you need the essentials only, there's nothing better than the mini shoulder bag.

Having a Moment: Beanies

Personally I am not the biggest fan of beanies -I'd much rather wear a knit beret- but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the moment in street style they are having right now.

I didn't quite realize the style power of the beanie until walking into LA's new Topshop store at the Grove -FINALLY! I may add- and seeing a whole wall full of beanies, knit in every possible color, some with cheeky words like "GEEK" and "I♥LA" written on them. My friend bought two to add to her already-large collection of knit caps.

It seems that everyone is a fan of the beanie trend, though, even street style stars. Especially street style stars. I swear, for every 5 pictures Tommy Ton took, at least one of them featured a beanie-sporting stylista.

I know you've probably all heard about The Hunger Games by now, but seriously you guys, it is soooo good. I went at midnight last night and it was fabulous. I do suggest reading the books first but even if you are just a casual viewer you will be able to appreciate the compelling tale of dear Katniss.

Technicolor Fantasy

Oscar de la Renta is for the bold, elegant woman who isn't afraid to be seen.

There's something very universal about Oscar de la Renta. Which is a strange concept, because in actuality, there's a wide scope of women who wouldn't be caught dead in a de la Renta dress. But for the woman who is on the verge, who might say 'Oscar de la Renta is too mature or too conservative or too girlie for me' well, this is the collection that might change it all.

It wasn't hard to convince me, of course, because it is quite evident that I am a die-hard de la Renta fan. I would do almost anything to get my hands on Fall's baby blue ballerina party dress (it's featured in my banner, after all!) I can see so many celebrities wearing this collection that I feel it will get dizzying, seeing so many starlets in Oscar de la Renta.

First there is the traditional Oscar de la Renta woman. The Upper East Side, Blair Waldorf or Lily van der Woodsen type who shops at Bergdorfs and drinks tea at the Plaza and plans benefit galas in the wintertime. But there's something youthful about these Ladies Who Lunch outfits. If the right girl gets her hand on the ice blue ruffled tweed dress, for example, it would loose some of its icy demeanor and become this absolutely cute frock. The yellow three-piece skirt suit on the left is rather Luella Bartley-esque (God I miss that woman's runway shows); all you need are some ironic hipster sunglasses and you take this skirt suit from Fifth Avenue to Bleecker Street. 

Then there are the obligatory tea-length dresses. Oh, how I wish I had a fairy-princess themed party to go to -that's how I feel after looking at some of these dresses. These dresses are couture candy, I'm telling you. Tea-length dresses are tricky and decidedly old-fashioned, but they are certainly making a comeback. Someone has already assigned Sarah Jessica Parker to the pink and black-embroidered dress, and I am begging the Gods to let Elle Fanning wear either blue dresses featured above. 

 
And then there are these beauties. These outfits are NOT for Ladies Who Lunch or any faint-of-heart woman. Probably not for people who are over the age of 25 (Unless you are Anna Dello Russo, who will probably don the hot pink feathery dress (romper? I don't know?) thing by the end of fashion month) I want Selena Gomez to wear the light pink peplum romper on the left, for example. I feel like she's a romper kind of girl and that would be cute and young but also really fancy-pants on her. And Lea Michelle can wear one of these since she loves Oscar de la Renta but always wears dresses that are a little too much for her. These rompers, on the other hand, would look fabulous!

And then there are the show-stopping gowns. What I would give to spend a day in that aqua blue feather ballgown. Or any of these dresses, for that matter. I just love Oscar. Don't you?
